A Heart Rate workout works backwards from how hard you want to be working. You pick Vigorous or Moderate, and your equipment adjusts to hold you at a target heart rate calculated from your age. You will need a heart rate strap or a watch connected. This article covers both options and the setup steps.
Read the steps below.
Important This workout needs a heart rate signal. Connect a chest strap using the Bluetooth key, or connect an Apple Watch, before you begin. Without one your equipment has nothing to work from. |
Two intensities
| Option | What it targets |
| Vigorous | The higher of the two targets, calculated from your age. |
| Moderate | The lower of the two targets, calculated from your age. |
Setting it up
- Connect your heart rate strap or watch first.
- Press the Heart Rate key, scroll to Vigorous or Moderate, and press ENTER.
- Enter your time — 1 to 60 minutes, default 30. Press ENTER.
- Enter your weight — 75 to 400 lbs, default 165. Press ENTER.
- Enter your age — 10 to 99. Your target is calculated from this, so a mistyped age moves the target with it. Press ENTER and start pedaling.
During your workout
Give it a few minutes. Your heart rate takes time to respond, so it will not settle on the target straight away. Keep your cadence steady and let the resistance do the work.
To watch your heart rate as you go, use the toggle arrows on the display.
Troubleshooting
- No heart rate is showing. Check the strap is snug and making contact, and reconnect it with the Bluetooth key. A dry chest strap often will not read — moisten the contacts.
- I cannot reach the target. Raise your cadence. If Vigorous is unrealistic for you, use Moderate instead.
- The target looks wrong for me. Check the age you entered — both options calculate the target from it.
Safety Stop if you feel dizzy, short of breath, or unwell. Talk to your doctor before heart rate training if you have a heart condition, take medication that affects your heart rate, or have not exercised in a while. |
