The pedal straps keep your shoes on the pedals while you ride. They should feel comfortable but tight enough that your shoes cannot slip at any point in the pedal stroke. This article shows how to loosen, fit, and secure the ribbed strap, and how to check the tightness before you start.
Read the steps below.
Adjusting a strap
- Push the strap latch upward with one hand to loosen the ribbed strap.
- Pull the ribbed strap out from underneath the latch with your other hand.
- Rest your foot on the pedal and wrap the strap over it to judge the length you need.
- Push the latch upward again and thread the strap through, choosing the slot that gives the right fit.
- Let go of the latch to secure it.
- Repeat on the other pedal — both straps should feel the same.
| Test and adjust the tightness before you start riding, not once you are up to speed. Wear the shoes you actually ride in — a strap set for thin trainers will be too tight for thicker soles. |
Getting the tightness right
Comfortable but firm. Your foot should not lift or slide at any point in the pedaling rotation, and you should not feel pressure across the top of your foot. If your feet go numb, the straps are too tight.
Troubleshooting
- My foot slips out. Move the strap to the next tighter slot. Slipping usually shows up at higher cadences first.
- My feet go numb or tingle. Too tight. Loosen by one slot.
- The strap will not stay put. Make sure it is threaded fully through the latch and the latch has dropped back down. If it still will not hold, contact Customer Support Services.
Safety Always wear shoes with rubber or non-slip soles — never bare feet, heels, leather soles, cleats, or spikes. Keep shoelaces tucked away from moving parts. |
