Applies to: Atmos Home Cross-Trainer — SL and SE4 Consoles
Getting on and off a cross-trainer takes a little technique, because the pedals move and there is no free-wheeling feature — they cannot be stopped instantly. This article shows the safe way to mount and dismount, how much clearance the machine needs, and the things not to do while using it.
Read the steps below.
Important Your cross-trainer is not equipped with a free-wheeling feature, which means the pedals cannot be stopped immediately. There is no emergency stop. Slow to a controlled halt rather than trying to stop dead, and never step off while the pedals are still moving. |
Mounting
Bring the near pedal to its lowest position by moving the arms with your hands.
Grasp the stationary handles. These are the fixed handles, not the moving arms.
Step onto the pedals carefully, one at a time, keeping hold of the handles, then begin pedaling gently before you build up effort.
Dismounting
- Slow to a stop — do not try to stop the pedals abruptly.
- Rotate the pedals so the one you are stepping off is at its lowest position.
- Hold the stationary handles and step off.
- Let go of the handles once you are steady on the floor.
Space around the machine
Leave at least 1 ft (0.3 m) of clearance in front of your cross-trainer and at least 2 ft (0.6 m) on the side. You should be able to mount comfortably from the side.
While you are using it
- Never face backward while using the cross-trainer.
- Do not stand or sit on the rear plastic covers, or stand on the centre tube.
- Wear proper shoes — rubber or non-slip soles, never bare feet. Keep loose clothing, shoelaces, and towels away from moving parts.
- Use the stationary handles whenever you want more stability. Using them instead of the moving arms also shifts the work to your legs only.
| For variety, the cross-trainer can be used in a backwards pedaling motion — that is different from facing backward, which you should never do. |
Troubleshooting
- The pedals keep moving after I stop. Expected — there is no free-wheeling feature. Let them come to rest before stepping off.
- I feel unsteady getting on. Bring the near pedal all the way down first and keep both hands on the stationary handles. Mounting from the side is easier than from behind.
